* USB Drives: This is a prevalent method for standalone cabinets. The arcade operator downloads the update file from the manufacturer's portal onto a USB drive, plugs it into a designated port on the machine, and initiates the update through a service menu.

* Network Updates: For arcades with linked cabinets or location-based entertainment venues, networked updates are crucial. Machines connected to the internet can automatically check for, download, and install patches from a central server, ensuring all units are synchronized and secure with minimal operator intervention.

* SD Cards: Similar to USB, some systems use SD or other memory cards for delivering large update files, especially for comprehensive game upgrades or new content.

When it comes to security patches, the stakes are high. While classic arcades were largely isolated, modern connected machines are potential targets for hacking, which can lead to coin mechanism fraud, unauthorized free plays, or data theft. Security updates address these risks by patching vulnerabilities in the operating system or game code. For highly sensitive systems, updates are often cryptographically signed by the manufacturer. This digital signature verification process ensures that only official, unaltered firmware from a trusted source can be installed, preventing malicious software from taking over the machine.
