Maintaining arcade machines in humid environments presents significant challenges that can severely impact their operation and longevity. The primary issue stems from moisture accumulation, which leads to various forms of damage across critical components. Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) are particularly vulnerable, as humidity causes corrosion on metal contacts and traces, resulting in electrical shorts and component failure. This corrosion can permanently destroy these expensive boards, requiring complete replacement.

Monitor systems suffer considerably in high humidity conditions. Moisture can penetrate the high-voltage areas of CRT monitors, creating dangerous arcs and potentially damaging the flyback transformer. Additionally, condensation forming on the screen's interior surface creates visibility issues and may lead to further electrical problems. The constant presence of moisture also accelerates the deterioration of high-voltage components, increasing the risk of complete monitor failure.

Control panels and mechanical components experience accelerated wear in humid conditions. Metal parts such as joystick mechanisms and button contacts are prone to rust, which affects their responsiveness and smooth operation. The moisture can cause buttons to stick and joysticks to become stiff or unresponsive. Furthermore, wooden cabinet structures are at risk of warping and swelling, compromising the machine's structural integrity and potentially damaging internal components.

Electrical systems face multiple threats from humidity. Power supplies are susceptible to corrosion and short circuits, while wiring connections can develop oxidation that leads to intermittent operation or complete failure. The constant presence of moisture also creates ideal conditions for mold growth, which can damage artwork, control panel overlays, and other aesthetic elements.

Preventing these issues requires comprehensive environmental control. Maintaining consistent temperature and humidity levels through dehumidifiers and proper ventilation is essential. Regular cleaning and inspection routines help identify early signs of corrosion or moisture damage. Applying protective coatings to PCBs and using silica gel packs inside cabinets can provide additional protection against humidity-related damage.
