A legendary example is Berzerk (1980), which featured a synthesized voice for the antagonist, uttering phrases like "Intruder alert! Intruder alert!" and "The humanoid must not escape." This was a groundbreaking feature that added a new layer of atmosphere and threat. Other classics like Gorf (1981) and Star Wars (1983) used speech synthesis for mission briefings and character dialogue, enhancing the narrative and making the games feel more advanced. This technology was often achieved using specialized speech chips, like the Votrax SC-01, which generated phonemes to form words.

Voice recognition, which allows the machine to understand and respond to player speech, is a more complex and less common feature. Its implementation is challenging due to the noisy environment of an arcade. However, some notable games have successfully used it. The most famous example is Journey's *Escape* (1983), a rhythm game based on the band. Players had to sing into a microphone to match the pitch and timing of the on-screen notes, making it a pioneer in interactive music gaming. Another example is *TRON* (1982), where players could theoretically yell "Help!" to summon a Recognizer, though this feature's reliability is debated. Modern arcade machines, particularly large-scale immersive experiences or light-gun shooters, might use simplified voice commands for cooperative play, such as shouting "Reload!" to assist a teammate.

Modern implementations rely on more sophisticated software and noise-canceling microphones. Speech synthesis is now commonplace, using high-quality pre-recorded audio or real-time text-to-speech (TTS) engines for dynamic announcements. Voice recognition, while still niche, benefits from better algorithms that can filter background noise, allowing for specific command words.
