The familiar clink of a coin dropping into a toy crane machine is the sound of a precise mechanical and electrical process beginning. This coin mechanism, often called a coin acceptor or validator, is the gateway to play. Its primary function is to authenticate a coin of the correct denomination and then signal the machine's main control board to start a game cycle.
The process starts when you insert a coin into the slot. The coin slides down a chute and passes through a sensing area. Modern machines typically use an electronic validator. This device employs sensors—often optical or electromagnetic—to measure the coin's physical properties: its diameter, thickness, metallic composition, and sometimes even its weight. It compares these readings to a pre-programmed profile for an accepted coin (like a quarter or a token). If the coin matches, it is accepted.
Once validated, the coin drops into a secure collection box or hopper. Critically, as it falls, it completes a key electrical step. The falling coin usually passes by or triggers a microswitch—a small, sensitive mechanical switch. The physical action of the coin moving past this switch changes its electrical state, sending a brief "pulse" or signal to the machine's central microprocessor.
This electrical signal is the crucial command. It tells the control board that a valid payment has been received. The board then credits the player with one play, often indicated by a counter on the screen lighting up from "0" to "1." This credit enables the joystick and button controls. When the player moves the joystick, the control board now has permission to activate the crane's motors for the allotted play time.
In simpler or older models, a purely mechanical coin mechanism might be used. Here, the correct coin's size and weight allow it to physically tilt a lever or turn a cam as it falls. This mechanical movement directly actuates a switch to send the start signal. Whether electronic or mechanical, the end goal is identical: to reliably convert a coin deposit into an electrical "start game" command, launching the exciting challenge of trying to grab a prize.
